How do I know if my dog is overweight?

We have all thought this in the past, so no need to be embarrassed.

It is quite difficult to assess whether your dog is overweight or not and there are no blanket guides to what your dog should weigh that is personal to themselves.

So, leave the scales behind for now and get hands on!

The best way to assess if your little fur baby is overweight is to feel their ribs and look at them from above.

Unfortunately, as a lot of our dogs can be quite furry, just looking without feeling can often mask their true “body condition”.

What you want to be able to do is feel their ribs easily when you press very gently along their ribcage. You should also be able to see a little bit of a waist when you are standing above them, looking down onto them.

If you can feel the ribs immediately without any pressure, perhaps it’s a good idea to pop in to see us in case there are some medical reasons why your pooch is underweight.

If you have to push quite firmly or simply can’t feel their ribs, we are happy to guide you about how to trim off those excess pounds and help your pooch stay healthy and happy for longer!
